Pumpkin Soup & Pumpkin Carving Competition Malham

The Lister Arms in Malham are hosting a Pumpkin carving competition from 2pm on Saturday the 31st of October.

Several local chef’s and food producers will be entering pumpkin creations, come along and join in the fun, apple bobbing, Paganum sausages and pumpkin soup will be available on the day.

Prizes for best carved pumpkin and fancy dress.  Anyone can enter and different classes for Adult & Kids entries.

And for all that pumpkin flesh from hollowing out and carving your pumpkins Terry Quinn, Chef Patron at the Lister Arms suggests this pumpkin soup recipe:-

Ingredients:-

  • pumpkin flesh
  • red onion chopped
  • carrot
  • green & red chilli to taste
  • salt & pepper
  • pinch of cumin, thyme & rosemary to taste
  • garlic
  • chicken or vegetable stock
  • fresh orange juice squeezed into finished soup

Method:-

  1. soften the chopped onion in a little butter (or Yorkshire rape seed oil)
  2. add chilli, garlic, chilli & herbs and fry a little to release flavours
  3. add diced pumpkin flesh and soften only for a minute or 2
  4. then add stock and simmer for 40 mins or leave to simmer in oven for an hour (bottom oven of the Aga)
  5. squeeze a little fresh orange juice before serving or a swirl of cream

British Food Fortnight is timed to coincide with the traditional Harvest Festival, the end of the British Summer and the start of Autumn, The 8th British Food Fortnight runs from the 21st September to the 4th of October 2009.

Malham Show, Farmers Market & MTB Trailquest

Malham Show in the shadow of Malham Cove will be held this Saturday the 29th August 2009.  Events run all day, Some Horse Jumping and judging starts at 9am and main ring events from 12 noon.   Malham Show is a traditional Agricultural and Horticultural show that has now been running for over 100 years.  Events and attractions include a Brass Band, Cattle, Sheep, Horse Jumping and Hunter Classes, Heavy Horses, tug of war, Children’s sports, Egg throwing, Classic cars, Vintage Tractors, Farmers Market, Craft tent, food & drink.

The Farmers Market will include Yorkshire Dales Meat, cakes, plants, granola, preserves, bread and more, confirmed stalls in the Farmers Market Marque include:-

Also taking place at the Show is our traditional Fellrace and the now well established Mountainbike Trailquest event covering some of the best Mountain bike terrain in the country.  Mountain Bike Trailquest is basically Orienteering on a bike and you can enter either the 2hr or 4 hour events, you are given a map with all the check points and values of each the most difficult or furthest away checkpoints having the highest values and you plan a route and set off, competitors use an electronic timing system where you can just place your dibber in any of the controls dotted around the course and this plots your route and score.  A very well supported event that forms part of the Local Trailquest Leagues NEMBOS & NYMBOS and also part of the National TCA Championship.

Thought it would be rude not to try out a Rib Eye Steak at the Lister Arms in Malham at a recent family outing for Sunday Tea, it’s always quiet on a Sunday evening in Malham as many of the weekend visitors are long gone.

Served with crispy onion rings, a nice big field mushroom, cooked tomato and plenty of chips. I asked for the steak medium and that’s exactly what I got, cooked perfectly, juicy and perfectly to my liking, the photo below does not do it justice as it tasted much better than the pic suggests.

Wilf’s Cafe in Malhamdale

Wilf’s famous Cafe visited Malham at the weekend for the Yorkshire Dales Open Adventure Series of adventure races and was sited on the Malham Show field providing competitors with vital sustanance, including pizza, veggie chilli and some great homebaking, flapjack, etc.

Wilf’s is based in Stavely in the Lake District and has a great reputation for fantastic grub, lot’s of vegetarian dishes and at the Cafe they also do some great meat dishes, bacon butties et al.  Always worth a visit and keep an eye open for the green mobile unit at other events.
